“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” ― Albert Einstein
We don’t often think of Einstein as an artist, but he was. For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics. It came, as it does for artists, from intuition and inspiration. From his letters: “When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come close to the conclusion that the gift of imagination has meant more to me than any talent for absorbing absolute knowledge.” As a teacher, I often remembered this quote and tried to instill an intuitive thought process for learning, rather than rote regurgitation of knowledge. Einstein himself worked intuitively and expressed himself logically. That’s why he said that great scientists were also artists.
Imagination is what allows us to see that which can’t be seen, heard, felt or known. But once we’ve imagined it, isn’t it then known? Even if only to ourselves? The process of creation starts within our imagination. Once cannot exist without the other. Even art that might be considered small, like our Single Frame Stories, they begin with a spark in the imagination born from a reaction to the prompt each week. And the art that we create is a true reflection of our intuitive thinking through imagination.
“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”
― Albert Einstein
Before we get to our challenge gallery, the prompt for next week is “Switch.” Make of it what you will.
