Challenge 14 Gallery: A Shot in the Dark
At some point, every artist is critiqued. Whether it’s by a “real” art critic (or someone who fancies himself as one), a friend or a fellow artist, or even a casual viewer- someone will always tell you what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong.
This isn’t neccessarily a bad thing, but that doesn’t make it a good thing either- it’s how you accept the critique and what you do with it that makes the difference.
Feedback is important, whether you seek it out or not. But the best critiques in all the land won’t help if you have the wrong attitude about them. Even rude or uninformed critiques can be helpful if you’re willing to listen, and (here’s the hard part) able to separate your own emotions from your art.
That’s the hardest part for me. I have a difficult time remembering that it’s my work that’s being critiqued, not ME. When you pour your heart and soul into a work of art, whether it be a visual work or a written work or music, it can feel like you’re being ripped apart when it’s only the work that’s being picked apart. It’s not YOUR flaws that are being pointed out.
An honest assesssment by a viewer, a peer or a critic can help you grow and learn as an artist, but only after you’ve made the decision to remove your emotions from the process.
I’m still working on that.
Before we get to our challenge gallery, the challenge prompt for next week is “Critique.” You saw that coming, didn’t you? Make of it what you will.
